Dr. Anil Adisesh Anil Adisesh studied medicine at the University of Liverpool, UK. After completing training in general medicine he qualified in family medicine quickly developing an interest in occupational medicine. He moved to Guy’s and St Thomas’ hospitals in London (UK) to specialise in occupational medicine. Whilst there he studied for a Masters of Science in Occupational Health Sciences at the University of Manchester, UK. For his Master’s thesis he undertook early research with exhaled Nitric Oxide in occupational asthma and later transferred to the University of Manchester for doctoral studies on the health effects of organic dust exposures. He has been a specialist physician since 1997 and from 2004 worked at the UK national Health and Safety Laboratory. Dr Adisesh is Chair of the World Health Organisation (WHO) Global Working Group on Occupational Health for the Revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD 11). He has worked with the International Labour Organisation Working Group on diagnostic and exposure criteria guidance on occupational diseases compiling information that will be of use to physicians, legislators and others concerned with occupational health. His work at Dalhousie Medicine New Brunswick includes teaching medical students and he is developing training for postgraduate qualified doctors about workplace health and supporting patients in their work. The broad theme of Dr Adisesh’s research is “Long and healthy working lives” recognizing that not only are careers sometimes curtailed through injury and illness but that increasingly we will be working at an older age and we wish to be as healthy as possible throughout our lives. Dr. Siemiatycki has been an invited speaker at over 150 meetings or seminars throughout the world, including for President Clinton’s Cancer Panel and as a Distinguished Lecturer at the U.S. National Cancer Institute. He has authored or co-authored over 180 peer-reviewed articles, 50 scientific reports, and 140 accepted presentations or posters.
John M. Badowski MSM I am a graduate of the University of Toronto. For many years I remained associated with the University and sat on its University Affairs Board, as well as the Governing Council. I was a member of the Toronto Police Service for 27 years where I served in many different units and squads. I spent nine years as a forensic investigator and was the Service’s first expert in bloodstain pattern interpretation, used primarily in homicide investigation. I also served extensively in Professional Standards. During my final years I was the officer-in-charge of the Forensic Identification Unit; the Community Programs Unit; and the Marine Unit. During my tenure with the Toronto Police I spent a decade overseeing fourth-year students from the University of Toronto who were conducting forensic research. This resulted in published research papers on various topics such as fingerprint recovery underwater, the decomposition of pig-cadavers in Lake Ontario, and the interpretation of bloodstains on fabrics. As well, I oversaw a “diversion” program for youths in trouble with the law. I served in Africa during the 1994 genocide in Rwanda and was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal of Canada (M.S.M.) I also received the Prague Medal from the government of Romania for assisting that country’s entry into NATO. In 2008 I was appointed by Order-in-Council to the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada. I was a presiding member for four years, and then became the manager of Central Region for two years On January 1, 2014 I was appointed by Order-in-Council to the Transportation Appeal Board of Canada. Outside of work I remain active in the world of antiques, astronomy, and the martial arts.
Dr. Jeremy Beach Jeremy Beach is Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine and Residency Program Director for the Occupational Medicine residency program at the University of Alberta. He has held this post since 2002. He is active in a number of research projects in the area of the epidemiology of work-related diseases, as well as projects on understanding how health care workers understand the concept of causation. His current work also involves supervising residents and overseeing the residency program, one of only three in Occupational Medicine in Canada. He contributes to other undergraduate and graduate teaching, running a course on Occupational and Environmental Disease (PHS 520) for graduate students, and supervising a number of graduate students. He trained in Medicine at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, UK, qualifying in 1983. He subsequently worked in General Internal Medicine and Respiratory Medicine and then moved to a research position leading a project studying occupational asthma in shipyard welders. He went on from this to train as a specialist in Occupational Medicine. In his work in Occupational Medicine he has combined work in academia at the University of Birmingham and Monash University in Australia; work in industry, becoming Senior Medical Officer with a major multinational engineering company; and the health service, working as a specialist in occupational medicine at hospitals in Birmingham and Bradford, UK (where he had responsibility for the occupational health of physicians and physicians in training), as well as a specialist in Occupational Lung Disease at the Birmingham Chest Clinic.
Dr. John Brennan Dr. John Brennan currently practises a mix of Family, Emergency, Sports, And Occupational Medicine in Parry Sound Ontario. He has been the medical director of Honda of Canada Manufacturing since 2000 (5000 employees). He also serves as a consultant to multiple other smaller manufacturers and school boards. He has acted as medical consultant to Molson Breweries, Purolator Courier, and Campbell’s Soup. He graduated from engineering at the University of Waterloo and from Medicine at the University of Western Ontario. Additionally he has his Diploma in Sports Medicine. He has a keen interest in return to work and musculoskeletal issues. He has multiple patents for exercise and rehabilitation equipment and is currently doing research with the University of Ontario Institute of Technology in the field of applying gaming technology to exercise and rehabilitation (exergaming). Dr. Brennan is currently an Assistant Professor at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine as well as Laurentian and Lakehead Universities.
Dr. Kenneth Corbet Dr. Corbet is a specialist in occupational medicine and a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Community Health Sciences, University of Calgary. He has developed courses, lectures, and learning resources in occupational medicine for undergraduate, graduate, and continuing medical education programs. He has served as Chief Examiner in Occupational Medicine with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Dr. Corbet has consulted in the rehabilitation, rail, oil and gas, petrochemical, and small business sectors, and just completed a three-year term with the Transportation Appeals Tribunal of Canada. His ongoing interests include the assessment of fitness to work, medical surveillance, and hearing loss.
Dr. Charl Els Dr. Charl Els is a psychiatrist, addiction specialist, and medical review officer. He is first Editor / co-author of a textbook on tobacco control, funded by Health Canada. Els is also an Associate Clinical Professor and an Editor for BioEthique Online. He regularly conducts assessments on employees in safety-sensitive positions.
Michele Crites Battié, PhD is a professor in the Physical Therapy Department at the University of Alberta and has held a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Common Spinal Disorders since 2002. Before joining the University of Alberta, she worked as a research associate professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Washington. Her broad research interests include common spinal conditions, such as lumbar spinal stenosis, intervertebral disc degeneration and low back pain problems. She also has a longstanding interest in factors influencing back pain reporting and disability in the workplace. Dr. Battié has contributed nearly 150 original research publications and written over 25 book chapters. Her group’s work has been recognized with a number of prestigious international research awards, including 5 Volvo/ISSLS Prize Awards from the International Society for the Study of the Lumbar Spine and 2 Kappa Delta Awards from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
Dr. Paul A. Farnan Dr. Farnan has worked in the field of occupational medicine and addiction medicine for more than twenty years. As well as being a member of the Occupational and Environmental Medical Association of Canada, he holds additional certification in Addiction Medicine and Family Practice, and he is a Clinical Associate Professor, Department of Family Practice at the University of British Columbia. His consulting with employers and unions has involved developing and delivering programs to assist employees whose work is impacted by addiction and mental health problems. He has assessed and provided treatment recommendations for thousands of individuals with addictive disorders, especially those involved in safety sensitive work.
Dr. Francis H. Y. Green Dr. Green received his medical degree from the University of Manchester, UK in 1968 and an MD degree in Pathology from the same institution in 1978. From 1977 to 1985 he was Chief of the Pathology Section of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in Morgantown, West Virginia, USA where he received extensive experience in occupational lung diseases both from the research and legislative perspectives. In 1985 he moved to the University of Calgary as a Medical Scholar under the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research. His current position is Professor in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of Calgary. He also has a clinical appointment with Calgary Laboratory Services.
His major research interests are occupational lung disease and asthma. With Dr. Andrew Churg, from UBC, Vancouver, he has co-edited a textbook entitled Pathology of Occupational Lung Disease, now in its second edition. He has published more than 100 research papers on occupational lung diseases, including silicosis, coal worker’s pneumoconiosis, asbestosis, and diseases due to silicates. When he was Section Head of the Pathology Department at the NIOSH Laboratories in the US, he supervised experimental studies of pneumoconiosis, ran the National Coal Worker’s Autopsy Program, and developed pathologic standards for the diagnosis of the major pneumoconioses, standards that are still used today by pathologists both for diagnosis and research. More recent contributions to the field include examination of mineral dusts in farm workers’ lungs, determining the relationship between smoking, coal mine dust exposure and emphysema and an analysis of the effects of the 2 mg per cubic meter coal dust standard on pathologic severity and type of pneumoconiosis in US coal miners. Currently Dr. Green is lead pathologist on a study of rapidly progressive coal worker’s pneumoconiosis in US coal miners. The recent upsurge in prevalence and severity of pneumoconiosis in US coal miners is thought to be in part related to increased exposure to freshly fractured crystalline silica due to new technologies that remove more of the rock overburden and under burden.
Finally, Dr. Green’s expertise in pathology has led to the development of a rescue therapy for acute asthma. He holds patents for the rights to this technology and has founded a company (SolAeroMed) in conjunction with the University of Calgary to commercialize the invention. Currently the drug is in clinical trials.
Dr. Douglas Hamm Dr. Hamm is a specialist in occupation medicine practicing in Victoria and Vancouver. He is a clinical assistant professor in the School of Population and Public Health at UBC and provides referral consultations to community physicians at the Occupational Medicine Clinic at Vancouver General Hospital and third party assessments to employers, unions, insurers, and legal parties. He has had a longstanding interest in enhancing the occupational medicine skills of family physicians through chairing the examination committee of CBOM for 10 years and currently is co-facilitating a pilot program for the University of Alberta’s Foundation Course in Occupational Medicine in BC.
Dr. Richard J L Heron Richard is the Vice-President Health and Chief Medical Officer at BP with responsibility for strategic development of the BP Group Health agenda including Employee Wellbeing, Occupational Health and Hygiene requirements for over 85,000 employees and Community and Public Health matters in the countries where BP operate. He trained in internal medicine in UK and Auckland, New Zealand, before specializing in Occupational Medicine. Richard joined BP in May 2006 from AstraZeneca pharmaceuticals where he was Head of Global Safety, Health and Risk Management He is President of the UK Faculty of Occupational Medicine, a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (UK), and Fellow of American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine Richard is honorary Professor of International Business and Health, Institute of Work Health and Organizations, University of Nottingham. He is married to Helen and has three daughters. He and his family are keen runners.
Dr. John Hickie John Hickie is a family physician based in Calgary. His current practice is in assessing workplace injuries on behalf of the Alberta WCB. Dr. Hickie also performs fitness to work examinations and medical legal independent evaluations for Viewpoint Medical Assessments. Medical interests are in musculoskeletal medicine, brain injury, pain and electrical injury. In addition to his medical practice Dr. Hickie sits on the Board of Governors and Senate of the University of Calgary.
Dr. David Jarman Dr. Jarman completed a B. Sc. in Biochemistry at McGill University in 1976, and MD at l’Universite de Sherbrooke in 1980. He then went on to a family practice residency at Memorial University of Newfoundland, and worked as a family physician in Stephenville NF, and then Quesnel BC, until 1992.
Dr. Jarman never did comfortably adapt to the constant sleep deprivation associated with small town family medicine, and decided to switch to a salaried job. He has worked as a medical advisor to WCB in BC since then. The work consists of giving advice on any and all medical issues related to workplace injuries and illnesses based on file reviews, examination of workers, visits to workplaces, conversations with treating physicians and other treatment providers, and arranging specialist consultations. The goal is to provide injured workers, within the confines of applicable policy and law, with what they need to return to gainful employment with the least possible disruption to the lives of themselves and their families. Dr. Jarman obtained CCBOM certification in 2008.
Dr. Christine Kennedy Dr. Kennedy graduated with a Medical Degree from the University of Calgary (MD 2004), and with Master’s degrees in Community Medicine (MUN 1997), and Economics (Oxford1998) and has a doctorate in Health Economics (Oxford 2000). She holds a CCFP in Family Medicine (Queen’s 2006) and a FRCPC in Public Health and Preventive Medicine (Queen’s-Community Medicine). Christine has extensive knowledge and varied experience in the practice of occupational medicine including: as a researcher and teacher, clinical trainee, Senior Public Health Economist and consultant (National and International-WHO Expert Panel on Human Health Effects of Radon Gas). She has published extensively on the cost-effectiveness of Radon gas exposure and remediation. She currently practices preventive medicine and occupational medicine in Alberta and Ontario.
Dr. Arlin Pachet Dr. Pachet is one of a select few Board Certified Clinical Neuropsychologists in Western Canada. He has a wealth of clinical experience working with patients with brain injury and mental health issues, he has maintained a private practice since 2003, and he has worked and managed two brain injury rehabilitation programs in Alberta. As part of Dr. Pachet’s clinical practice, he commonly completes neuropsychological assessments, cognitive screens, comprehensive psychological evaluations, vocational assessments, and concussion and capacity evaluations. Dr. Pachet has provided numerous training workshops within Alberta Health Services and abroad specifically related to acquired brain injury and capacity evaluation. Lastly, Dr. Pachet has a wide variety of professional presentations and publications in the fields of capacity assessment, test construction, test validity, and acquired brain injury, and he has provided expert testimony to the Courts of Queens Bench within various jurisdictions in Canada.
Dr. Kevin Percy Dr. Percy’s 35 years experience in research and monitoring in the fields of air pollution and climate change effects has informed WBEA’s current monitoring designs and practices. Prior to joining WBEA as Lead Scientist in 2009, Dr. Percy was Senior Scientist-Global Change with Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), Canadian Forest Service. He holds a PhD from the University of Bristol, England, M.Sc. and B.Sc.F. degrees from the University of New Brunswick, Fredericton, N.B., Canada. Until May 2009, Dr. Percy served as a Principal Investigator and Steering Committee member of the world’s largest greenhouse gas-forest experiment. The Aspen FACE (Free Air Carbon Dioxide Enrichment) User Facility was located in Rhinelander, Wisconsin (http://aspenface.mtu.edu/). The Aspen FACE experiment was primarily supported by the US Department of Energy, Program for Ecosystem Research and comprised over 100 scientists from 9 countries. On April 7, 2009 Scientific American featured Aspen FACE as one of “Ten Important Atmospheric Science Experiments.”(http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=10-climate-experiments). Dr. Percy’s research career focused on developing alternative approaches for analysis of air quality -plant response relationships. This work has resulted in standards-based, exposure-response functions for application within an ambient air quality management context. Dr. Percy is the author of numerous scientific publications in leading journals and books. Among these are retrospective, as well as forward-looking “state of science” analyses at global and national scales. Throughout his career, Dr Percy collaborated with scientists in Canada and over 20 countries. Many of these previous collaborations since he joined WBEA in 2009 have been providing expertise to WBEA, and presenting forward looking solutions and innovations to WBEA’s scientifically enhanced monitoring work.
Dr. David Pettit Dr. Pettit is an Occupational Medicine specialist and currently practices occupational, aviation and diving medicine on Vancouver Island.
He has a long association with the aviation industry over many years and in a number of capacities, including aircraft accident investigation.
Dr. Pettit maintains an interest in the health and safety of industry workers and the potential for adverse third party consequences in the event of human performance failure in the aviation industry.
Diane Radnoff, P.Eng., M.Eng., CIH Diane Radnoff is a Chemical Engineer and Industrial Hygienist. She obtained her Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario and her Masters of Engineering in Industrial Hygiene from the University of Toronto. Ms. Radnoff has had extensive experience in both the environmental and occupational health and safety fields. Her first position was with Environment Canada, developing and testing innovative environmental remediation technology for spill clean-up. She worked for over 15 years in the consulting field, specializing in assessment of environmental and health and safety issues and the development and implementation of environmental remediation at industrial, residential, commercial and First Nation sites. Ms. Radnoff has been with the Alberta government since 1999. She is responsible for technical support to the department and external stakeholders regarding industrial hygiene issues. She also develops policy and interpretations related to the Alberta legislation.
Dr. Charles H. Samuels Dr. Samuels is the Medical Director of the Centre for Sleep and Human Performance, a College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta, and American Academy of Sleep Medicine accredited sleep centre in Calgary, Alberta. The Centre provides clinical and diagnostic services in a community based setting. His clinical practice and research focus on the effect of sleep deprivation and disruption on health and performance. Dr. Samuels is actively involved in the development and implementation of Sleep Education Programs for the Department of Continuing Medical Education at the University of Calgary. Dr. Samuels is the Past VP Clinical of the Canadian Sleep Society, a member of the Institute of Public Health at the University of Calgary and has served as the Vice-Chairman for the Research Ethics Review Committee of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta.
Dr. Samuels’ was the lead investigator of the Calgary Police Service Health and Human Performance Research Initiative. This was a 10-year North American collaborative project including Harvard University, New York State University Buffalo, Washington State University and the US National Institutes of Occupational Safety and Health, exploring the impact of rotating shift work on the health and performance of police officers. This research led to the publication of “Sleep Loss in Police and implications for Other First Responders and the Military,” a chapter in Principles and Practice of Sleep Medicine, which Dr. Samuels co-authored with Dr. Bryan Vila.
Dr. Sol Sax Sol Sax has been an occupational physician for over 30 years. Although a family physician at heart, he started his occupational career in 1980 as a staff physician with Ontario Hydro ( Now OPG) and became chief physician in 1986. He spent 2 years as a self-employed consultant with Boeing Canada, and Toronto Star Newspapers as Medical Director (1989 to 1991), and subsequently spent almost 20 years with the DuPont company first as Medical Director for Canada and then as Global Medical Director. Since leaving that role in 2007, he has worked for many different organizations including GE in the part-time role of Medical Director – Canada since Jan 2013, GSK, Hamilton Hospitals Assessment Center, Tonolli, Kinross gold, Vale –Inco, and others. He has been a Medical Consultant to the WSIB, AECB and been involved in many international committees, task forces and advisory boards.
He has been a member of the Toronto YMCA health advisory committee, and an executive on numerous professional organizations, including Treasurer for the Occupational and Environmental Medical Association of Canada (1997-2002), President of the Ontario Society for Occupational and Environmental Medicine and Chair of the Alliance of SHE professionals of Ontario. He is a past chair of the OMA section of Occupational and Environmental Health. He is a lecturer in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto and the Northern School of Medicine. He has also been an examiner for both the Royal College and the Canadian Board of Occupational Medicine.
Born in Western Australia Sol graduated from University of Toronto with degrees in both Eng. Sci. (1973) and Medicine (1978). He has a postgraduate diploma from McMaster University in Occupational Safety and Health (1981) and received his fellowship designation as an Occupational Health specialist from the Royal College of Physicians Canada in 1989. He is an active outdoor enthusiaist who loves to play tennis, cycle, and spend time puttering at his cottage.
Dr. A. Robert Schnatter Rob is a Senior Scientific Advisor in Occupational Health at ExxonMobil Biomedical Sciences, in Clinton, NJ. USA. He is Fellow of the American College of Epidemiology and the sole industry advisor for the US National Death Index. He has a doctorate in Epidemiology from Columbia University and a master’s in biostatistics from the University of Pittsburgh. Rob’s primary focus has been on the health effects of benzene exposure, and recently completed two major efforts: the first was a multi-disciplinary examination of benzene’s health effects in various Shanghai-area industries, while the second was an international pooled analysis of benzene-exposed petroleum workers. Rob was also lead author on a Canadian study of Imperial Oil workers which was part of the international pooled analysis, and also has performed cohort studies in these workers that examined the effects of asbestos and other exposures in these workers. He also chairs his company’s senior technical council, which encourages technical health over a broad range of research and engineering disciplines. He is a frequent mentor, journal reviewer and advisory committee participant on benzene exposure and the role of epidemiologic data in risk assessment.
Dr. Hakique Virani Hakique is certified as a specialist physician both in Addictions Medicine (by the American Board of Addictions Medicine) and Public Health and Preventive Medicine (by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada). He is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry and the University of Alberta. He has served in a variety of leadership positions in the medical community and beyond. Since beginning his career, he has worked in executing public health approaches to critical issues such as prescription drug abuse and dependency, pandemic response, and population health disparities experienced by Canada’s First Nations people.
He serves on the College of Physicians and Surgeons Advisory Committee on Methadone Maintenance Treatment, and has been a member of the provincial Coalition on Prescription Drug Misuse since its inception as the first cross sectoral collaborative effort of its kind in Canada. He also sat on the National Advisory Committee which delivered Canada’s national strategy on prescription drug abuse – First Do No Harm. Hakique teaches the Alberta version of the core course on Opioid Dependency Treatment for the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health.
In recognition of his contributions to health care and the community at large, Hakique was recognized as one of Avenue Magazine’s Top 40 Under 40 in Edmonton.
Dr. JianLi Wang Dr. JianLi Wang is an associate professor of the Departments of Psychiatry and of Community Health Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, University of Calgary. He received his PhD (Epidemiology) from the University of Calgary. His research interests are in psychiatric epidemiology with a focus on developing prediction tools for early identification of mental disorders, and workplace mental health. Dr. Wang is leading research projects, funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, on investigating workplace factors that trigger depressive and anxiety disorders, the impacts of workplace factors and mental disorders on employees’ productivity (presenteeism and absenteeism) and intention to leave, and workplace mental health accommodations for employees with a mental disorder.

Dr. Anil Adisesh Le Dr Adisesh a étudié la médecine à l’Université de Liverpool au Royaume-Uni. Une fois terminé sa formation en médecine générale, il a été habilité à exercer comme généraliste et s’est bientôt intéressé à la médecine du travail. Il a déménagé afin de se spécialiser en médecine du travail aux Guy’s and St. Thomas’ Hospitals à Londres, où il a complété sa maîtrise ès sciences en santé au travail à l’Université de Manchester (Royaume-Uni). Concurremment, il a entrepris des recherches initiales sur le monoxyde d’azote expiré et l’asthme du travail dans le cadre de sa maîtrise. Par la suite, il s’est inscrit à l’Université de Manchester en vue de faire des études doctorales sur les effets de l’exposition aux poussières organiques sur la santé. Il est médecin spécialiste depuis 1997 et travaille au Health and Safety Laboratory national du Royaume-Uni depuis 2004.
Le Dr Adisesh préside le groupe de travail mondial de l’Organisation mondiale de la santé (OMS) sur la santé au travail pour la révision de la Classification internationale des maladies (CIM11). Il a collaboré avec le groupe de travail de l’Organisation internationale du Travail sur l’orientation des critères de diagnostic et d’exposition applicables aux maladies professionnelles, qui compile des données qui pourront servir aux médecins, aux législateurs et aux autres personnes qui s’intéressent à la médecine du travail. Son travail à la Faculté de médecine de l’Université Dalhousie au Nouveau-Brunswick comprend l’enseignement des étudiants en médecine et l’élaboration d’une formation destinée aux médecins admis au postdoctorat qui porte sur la santé au travail et le soutien des patients dans leur travail.
Le thème général de la recherche du Dr Adisesh est « une vie professionnelle longue et saine », reconnaissant que non seulement une carrière peut être écourtée par une blessure ou une maladie, mais aussi que nous travaillerons jusqu’à un âge plus avancé et que nous aimerions jouir de la meilleure santé possible tout au long de notre vie.
John M. Badowski MSM M. Badowski est diplômé de l’Université de Toronto. Il entretient des liens avec l’université depuis longtemps et a siégé à son Conseil des affaires universitaires, ainsi qu’au Conseil de l’Université.
Il était membre du Service de police de Toronto pendant 27 ans, où il a servi au sein de plusieurs unités et brigades. Il a été enquêteur en médecine légale pendant neuf ans et il était le premier expert du Service en analyse de la morphologie des taches de sang, une spécialité utilisée principalement aux fins des enquêtes sur les homicides. M. Badowski possède également de nombreuses années d’expérience dans le domaine des normes professionnelles. Durant ses dernières années dans le Service de police, il était officier responsable de l’unité de médecine légale, de l’unité des programmes communautaires et de l’unité marine. Au cours de sa carrière au Service de police de Toronto, il a passé une décennie à superviser des étudiants en quatrième année qui effectuaient des recherches en criminalistique. Celles-ci ont mené à des travaux de recherche publiés portant sur le relevé des empreintes digitales sous l’eau, la décomposition de cadavres de porcs au lac Ontario et l’analyse des taches de sang sur les tissus. Il a également chapeauté un programme de « divertissement » de jeunes ayant des démêlés avec la justice.
M. Badowski a été affecté en Afrique pendant le génocide rwandais en 1994 et il a été décerné la Médaille de service méritoire (MSM). Il a également été conféré la Médaille de Prague du gouvernement de la Roumanie pour avoir facilité l’entrée du pays à l’OTAN.
Le 1er janvier 2014, il a été nommé par décret au Tribunal d’appel des transports du Canada.
Dr. Jeremy Beach Le Dr Beach est professeur agrégé au Département de médecine de l’Université de l’Alberta depuis 2002. Il participe à plusieurs projets de recherche étudiant l’épidémiologie des maladies liées au travail, ainsi qu’à des projets portant sur la compréhension de la causalité par les travailleurs en santé. Actuellement, il supervise les résidents ainsi que le programme de résidence, l’un des trois seuls programmes en médecine du travail au Canada. Il contribue à l’enseignement d’étudiants au premier cycle et aux cycles supérieurs, organise un cours sur les maladies environnementales et professionnelles (PHS 520) offert aux étudiants aux cycles supérieurs et supervise un certain nombre d’étudiants aux cycles supérieurs.
Le Dr Beach a suivi sa formation en médecine à l’Université Newcastle, au Royaume-Uni, où il a été habilité à exercer en 1983. Par la suite, il a travaillé dans les domaines de la médecine interne générale et de la pneumologie, ensuite de quoi il a accepté un poste de direction sur un projet d’étude de l’asthme professionnel chez les soudeurs d’un chantier naval. Dans le cadre de ses activités dans le domaine de la médecine du travail, il a œuvré dans le milieu universitaire à l’Université de Birmingham et à l’Université Monash en Australie; dans l’industrie, en tant que directeur médical d’une société d’ingénierie multinationale importante; et dans le domaine de la santé, comme spécialiste en médecine du travail dans des hôpitaux à Birmingham et à Bradford, au Royaume-Uni (où il était responsable de la santé professionnelle des médecins et des médecins en formation) et spécialiste en maladies pulmonaires professionnelles au Birmingham Chest Clinic.
Dr. John Brennan Le Dr Brennan pratique actuellement la médecine de famille, d’urgence, du sport et du travail à Parry Sound, en Ontario. Il est directeur médical de Honda of Canada Mfg. Inc. depuis 2000 (5 000 employés). Il agit comme consultant auprès de plusieurs autres petits fabricants et de conseils scolaires. Il a servi en comme consultant médical auprès des brasseries Molson, de Purolator Courrier et de la compagnie Campbell Soup.
Diplômé en génie de l’Université de Waterloo et en médecine de l’Université Western, le Dr Brennan possède également un diplôme en médecine du sport. Il porte un intérêt particulier au retour au travail et aux problèmes musculosquelettiques et détient plusieurs droits de brevets sur des équipements de sport et de réadaptation. Présentement, il mène des recherches en collaboration avec l’Institut universitaire de technologie de l’Ontario dans le domaine de l’application des jeux vidéo à l’exercice et à la rééducation (jeux d’entraînement).
Le Dr Brennan est professeur adjoint à l’École de médecine du Nord de l’Ontario, ainsi qu’aux universités Laurentienne et Lakehead.
Dr. Kenneth Corbet Le Dr Corbet est spécialiste en médecine du travail et professeur agrégé de clinique au Département des sciences de la santé communautaire à l’université de Calgary.
Il a élaboré des cours, des conférences et des ressources d’apprentissage destinés aux étudiants au premier cycle et aux cycles supérieurs sur la médecine du travail, ainsi que des cours de formation continue en médecine. Il a agi à titre d’examinateur en chef de la médecine du travail auprès du Collège royal des médecins et chirurgiens du Canada.
Le Dr Corbet a été consultant dans les secteurs ferroviaire, pétrochimique, de la réadaptation et des petites entreprises, et il vient d’achever un mandat de trois ans au Tribunal d’appel des transports du Canada.
Il s’intéresse à l’évaluation de l’aptitude au travail, à la surveillance médicale et à la perte auditive.
Dr. Charl Els Le Dr Els est psychiatre, spécialiste en toxicomanie et médecin-examinateur. Il est directeur de la rédaction et coauteur d’un manuel sur la lutte contre le tabagisme financé par Santé Canada. Le Dr Els est également professeur agrégé clinique et éditeur de la revue BioéthiqueOnline. Il effectue régulièrement des évaluations d’employés qui occupent des postes critiques pour la sécurité.
Michele Crites Battié, PhD Mme Michele Crites Battié, Ph. D., est professeure au Département de physiothérapie de l’Université de l’Alberta et occupe une chaire de recherche du Canada de niveau 1 pour les pathologies rachidiennes communes depuis 2002. Avant de se joindre à l’Université de l’Alberta, elle était professeure agrégée de recherche au Département de l’orthopédie à l’Université de Washington.
Ses intérêts généraux en matière de recherche comprennent les pathologies rachidiennes communes, telles que la sténose lombaire, la dégénérescence des disques intervertébraux et les lombalgies. De plus, elle s’intéresse depuis longtemps aux facteurs qui contribuent aux signalements de douleur lombaire et à l’incapacité dans le milieu de travail.
Mme Battié a contribué à presque 150 publications de recherche et elle est l’auteure de plus de 25 chapitres de livres. En reconnaissance de leur travail, elle et son groupe ont obtenu de nombreux prix de recherche internationaux prestigieux, y compris cinq prix Volvo/ISSLS de l’International Society for the Study of the Lumbar Spine ainsi que deux prix Kappa Delta de l’American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
Dr. Paul A. Farnan Le Dr Farnan œuvre dans le domaine de la médecine du travail et du traitement de dépendances depuis plus de vingt ans. En plus d’être membre de l’Association canadienne de la médecine du travail et de l’environnement, il est agréé en traitement de dépendances et en médecine familiale. Il est aussi professeur clinique agrégé au Département de médecine familiale à l’Université de la Colombie-Britannique.
Ses consultations avec les employeurs et les syndicats incluent l’élaboration et la prestation de programmes visant à aider les employés dont le travail est affecté par les dépendances et les problèmes de santé mentaux. Il a évalué des milliers de personnes ayant de troubles de dépendance, surtout des personnes occupant des postes critiques pour la sécurité, et leur a formulé des recommandations de traitement.
Le Dr Green a obtenu son diplôme en médecine en 1968 et son doctorat en médecine pathologique en 1978 de l’Université de Manchester, au Royaume-Uni. De 1977 à 1985, il était chef de la section de pathologie du National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), à Morgantown, en Virginie-Occidentale, aux États-Unis, où il a acquis une grande expérience dans les optiques de la recherche et de la législation du domaine des maladies pulmonaires professionnelles. En 1985, il a accepté un poste à l’Université de Calgary comme chercheur-boursier en médecine pour l’Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research. Il est aujourd’hui professeur au Départment de pathologie et de médecine de laboratoire et clinicien aux Calgary Laboratory Services.
Ses principaux champs de recherche sont les maladies pulmonaires professionnelles et l’asthme. Il a coédité, en collaboration avec le Dr Andrew Churg de l’Université de la Colombie-Britannique, un manuel intitulé Pathology of Occupational Lung Disease, maintenant à sa deuxième édition. Il a également publié plus de 100 rapports de recherche sur les maladies pulmonaires professionnelles, dont la silicose, la pneumoconiose des houilleurs, l’amiantose et les maladies liées aux silicates. Dans son rôle de chef de section du Service de pathologie aux laboratoires NIOSH aux États-Unis, il a supervisé des études expérimentales sur la pneumoconiose, a géré le programme national d’autopsies des houilleurs et a élaboré des normes en matière de diagnostic et de recherche en pathologie. Ses contributions récentes au domaine comprennent l’examen de particules minérales dans les poumons de travailleurs agricoles, la définition du rapport entre l’usage du tabac, l’exposition à la poussière de dans les mines charbon et l’emphysème, ainsi que l’analyse des effets de la norme établie de 2 mg par mètre cube de poussière de charbon sur la gravité pathologique et le type de pneumoconiose chez les houilleurs américains.
Le Dr Green est actuellement pathologiste en chef d’une étude sur la pneumoconiose évoluant rapidement chez les houilleurs américains. La forte augmentation récente de la prévalence et de la gravité de la pneumoconiose chez ces derniers semble être liée à une augmentation de l’exposition à la silice cristalline fraîchement fracturée causée par de nouvelles technologies qui enlèvent une plus grande partie des roches sus-jacentes et sous-jacentes.
L’expertise en pathologie du Dr Green a mené à la mise au point d’un traitement de sauvetage pour des cas d’asthme aigu. Il détient des droits de brevets pour cette technologie et a fondé, en collaboration avec l’Université de Calgary, une entreprise (SolAeroMed) en vue de commercialiser l’invention. Le médicament fait présentement l’objet d’essais cliniques.
Dr. Douglas Hamm Le Dr Douglas Hamm est spécialiste en médecine du travail et pratique à Victoria et à Vancouver. Il est professeur clinique agrégé à l’École de la santé de la population et de la santé publique à l’Université de la Colombie-Britannique et fournit des conseils en aiguillage à des médecins locaux à la Clinique de la médecine du travail de l’Hôpital général de Vancouver. De plus, il effectue des évaluations par un tiers pour des employeurs, des syndicats, des assureurs et des parties à des litiges. Il porte depuis longtemps un intérêt au perfectionnement des compétences en médecine du travail des généralistes et préside depuis dix ans le comité d’examen de la CCMT. Actuellement, il facilite conjointement en Colombie-Britannique un programme pilote pour le cours d’introduction à la médecine du travail de l’Université de l’Alberta.
Dr. Richard J L Heron Le Dr Richard J. L. Heron est vice-président – santé et directeur médical à la société BP. Il est responsable du développement stratégique du programme de santé du groupe BP, y compris le bien-être des employés, la médecine au travail et les prescriptions d’hygiène de plus de 85 000 employés, ainsi que des questions de santé communautaire et publique dans les pays où BP est actif.
Avant de se spécialiser en médecine du travail, il a fait ses études en médecine interne au Royaume-Uni et à Auckland, en Nouvelle-Zélande. Il s’est joint à BP en mai de 2006 après avoir travaillé à la société pharmaceutique AstraZeneca, où il était directeur de la santé, de l’hygiène et de la gestion du risque à l’international.
Il est aujourd’hui président de la Faculté de la médecine du travail du Royaume-Uni, membre du Royal College of Physicians (Royaume-Uni) et membre de l’American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine.
Le Dr Heron est professeur honoraire des affaires internationales et de la santé à l’Institut du travail, de la santé et des organisations de l’Université de Nottingham.
Dr John Hickie Le Dr Hickie est médecin de famille à Calgary. Sa pratique actuelle consiste à évaluer les blessures professionnelles au nom de la WCB de l’Alberta. Il effectue également des évaluations de l’aptitude au travail et des évaluations médico-légales indépendantes pour Viewpoint Medical Assessments. Ses intérêts en matière de médecine sont la médecine musculosquelettique, les lésions cérébrales, la douleur et l’électrisation. En plus de sa pratique régulière, il siège au Conseil des gouverneurs et au Sénat de l’Université de Calgary.
Dr. David Jarman Le Dr Jarman a obtenu son baccalauréat ès sciences en biochimie à l’Université McGill en 1976 et son doctorat en médecine à l’Université de Sherbrooke en 1980. Par la suite, il a fait sa résidence en médecine familiale à l’Université Memorial de Terre-Neuve, et il a travaillé comme médecin de famille à Stephenville, à Terre-Neuve et ensuite à Quesnel, en Colombie-Britannique, jusqu’en 1992.
Le Dr Jarman ne s’est jamais habitué adéquatement à la privation de sommeil associée à la pratique de la médecine familiale dans les petites villes, et il a décidé de solliciter un poste à traitement annuel. Depuis, il travaille comme conseiller médical à la WCB de la Colombie-Britannique. Son travail consiste à prodiguer des conseils sur tous les problèmes médicaux associés aux blessures et aux maladies liées au travail, en se basant sur les études de dossier, l’examen des travailleurs, les visites des milieux de travail, les conversations avec les médecins traitants et les autres fournisseurs de traitement, et l’organisation de consultations avec des spécialistes. Son but est de fournir aux travailleurs blessés, tout en respectant la législation et les politiques applicables, tout ce qu’il leur faut en vue de reprendre l’activité rémunératrice et de limiter au maximum la perturbation de leur vie et de celle des membres de leur famille. Le Dr Jarman a obtenu son CCCMT en 2008.
Dr. Christine Kennedy La Dre Kennedy est diplômée en médecine de l’Université de Calgary (MD, 2004). Elle est titulaire d’une maîtrise en médecine communautaire (Université Memorial de Terre-Neuve, 1997) et d’une maîtrise en économie (Oxford, 1998). Elle détient un CCMF en médecine familiale (Queen’s, 2006) et un FRCPC en santé publique et médecine préventive (Queen’s, médecine communautaire). Elle possède des connaissances approfondies et de l’expérience diversifiée dans la pratique de la médecine du travail, notamment comme chercheuse et enseignante, stagiaire clinique, économiste principale de la santé publique et consultante (sur les plans national et international – panel d’experts sur les effets du radon sur la santé humaine). Elle est l’auteure de nombreux écrits publiés sur le rapport coût-efficacité de l’exposition au radon et de la d’atténuation de celui-ci. Présentement, elle pratique la médecine préventive et la médecine du travail en Alberta et en Ontario.
Dr. Arlin Pachet Le Dr Pachet est l’un des rares détenteurs d’un certificat de spécialiste en neuropsychologie clinique dans l’Ouest du Canada. Il possède une vaste expérience auprès de patients souffrant de lésions cérébrales et de problèmes de santé mentale. Il a maintenu sa pratique privée depuis 2003 et il a œuvré, en Alberta, au sein de deux programmes de rééducation et de réadaptation des personnes ayant subi des lésions cérébrales qu’il a également dirigés. Dans sa pratique clinique, il effectue régulièrement des évaluations neuropsychologiques, des tests de dépistage cognitif, des évaluations psychologiques compréhensives, des évaluations professionnelles, des évaluations de commotions cérébrales et des évaluations des capacités. Le Dr Pachet a animé plusieurs ateliers au sein des services de santé de l’Alberta, et ailleurs dans le monde, sur les lésions cérébrales acquises et l’évaluation des capacités. Il est également l’auteur de diverses publications et présentations professionnelles dans les domaines de l’évaluation de l’aptitude au travail, l’élaboration de tests, la validité des tests et les lésions cérébrales acquises, et il a servi comme témoin expert à la Cour du banc de la reine dans différentes juridictions au Canada.
Dr. Kevin Percy M. Kevin Percy est directeur général de la Wood Buffalo Environmental Association (WBEA), une société indépendante à but non lucratif axé sur le consensus à Fort McMurray, en Alberta. Parmi ses membres comptent des intervenants autochtones, d’ONGE, gouvernementaux et industriels. Une société multilatérale, la WBEA surveille la qualité de l’air, les effets sur le milieu terrestre et l’exposition humaine aux émissions atmosphériques à l’intérieur de la municipalité régionale de Wood Buffalo, qui englobe la région des sables bitumineux de l’Athabasca.
M. Percy habite à Fort McMurray depuis cinq ans. Il détient un doctorat de l’Université de Bristol, en Angleterre (1987), ainsi qu’une maîtrise en sciences (1979) et un baccalauréat ès sciences forestières de l’Université du Nouveau-Brunswick, à Fredericton, au Canada.
Avant de se joindre à la WBEA en tant que scientifique en chef en janvier 2009, M. Percy était préposé principal à la recherche – changement à l’échelle planétaire (pollution atmosphérique et changement climatique) à Ressources naturelles Canada. Jusqu’en mai 2009, il a occupé le rôle de chercheur principal et codirecteur de l’une des plus grandes expériences sur les émissions de gaz à effet de serre et les forêts. L’expérience Aspen FACE, pour Free Air Carbon Dioxide Enrichment (enrichissement en dioxyde de carbone à l’air libre), réalisée à l’échelle écosystémique, s’est déroulée à Rhinelander, au Wisconsin (http://aspenface.mtu.edu/). L’expérience était principalement financée de 1997 à 2008 par le Département de l’Énergie des États-Unis et plus de 110 scientifiques de neuf différents pays y ont contribué.
M. Percy siège actuellement au Comité d’experts du Conseil des académies canadiennes sur la capacité potentielle des technologies nouvelles et émergentes de réduire les séquelles environnementales de l’exploitation des sables bitumineux (Société royale du Canada, Académie canadienne du génie, Académie canadienne des sciences de la santé).
M. Percy a rédigé de nombreux écrits scientifiques publiés dans des livres et des revues prestigieuses, dont l’ouvrage récent Alberta Oil Sands: Energy, Industry and the Environment (Elseverier, Oxford). Parmi ses publications, on compte des écrits sur les réactions à l’exposition à la pollution atmosphérique sur le terrain et dans un contexte expérimental, les nouveaux concepts et conceptions des activités de surveillance, ainsi que des analyses rétrospectives de l’état de la science.
M. Percy a assumé diverses fonctions dans le cadre du processus de préparation du Quatrième Rapport d’évaluation du Groupe d’experts intergouvernemental sur l’évolution du climat élaboré par le Groupe mondial d’experts sur l’adaptation des forêts aux changements climatiques de l’Union internationale des instituts de recherches forestières, ainsi que d’autres processus à intervenants multiples. Il contribue à des recherches sur la pollution atmosphérique et à l’Air Pollution Workshop (atelier sur la pollution atmosphérique) depuis 1977.
Dr. David PettitLe Dr Pettit est spécialiste en médecine du travail et pratique la médecine du travail, aéronautique et de plongée sur l’île de Vancouver.
Il a une relation de longue date avec l’industrie de l’aéronautique, où il a occupé diverses fonctions, notamment celle d’enquêteur sur les accidents d’aéronefs.
Le Dr Pettit manifeste un intérêt soutenu à la santé et à la sécurité des travailleurs de l’industrie et aux possibles répercussions néfastes sur les tierces parties en cas de défaillances de la performance humaine dans l’industrie aéronautique.
Diane Radnoff, P.Eng., M.Eng., CIH Mme Radnoff est ingénieure chimique et hygiéniste industrielle. Elle a obtenu son baccalauréat ès sciences en génie chimique de l’Université Queen’s à Kingston, en Ontario, et sa maîtrise en génie en hygiène industrielle de l’Université de Toronto.
Elle possède une grande expérience dans les domaines de la sécurité et de la santé de l’environnement et du travail. Dans son premier poste, à Environnement Canada, elle a développé et mis à l’épreuve des technologies d’assainissement pour le nettoyage consécutif à un déversement accidentel. Elle a travaillé pendant plus de quinze ans dans le domaine de la consultation, où elle s’est spécialisée dans l’évaluation des problèmes de santé et de sécurité environnementales et le développement et la mise en œuvre des techniques d’assainissement environnemental dans les sites industriels, résidentiels, commerciaux et de Premières Nations.
Mme Radnoff est employée au gouvernement de l’Alberta depuis 1999. Elle est responsable du soutien technique au service et aux intervenants extérieurs en ce qui a trait aux questions d’hygiène du travail. Elle élabore des politiques et des définitions relativement aux lois albertaines.
Dr. Charles H. Samuels Le Dr Samuels est directeur médical du Centre for Sleep and Human Performance, un College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta, et d’un centre du sommeil à Calgary, en Alberta, agréé par l’American Academy of Sleep Medicine. Sa pratique clinique et ses recherches sont axées sur les effets du manque de sommeil et de la perturbation du sommeil sur la santé et de la performance. Le Dr Samuels participe activement à l’élaboration et à la mise en œuvre de programmes éducatifs sur le sommeil pour le Département de formation continue en médecine à l’Université de Calgary. Il est l’ancien vice-président – clinique, de la Société canadienne du sommeil, membre de l’Institut de la santé publique de l’Université de Calgary et l’ancien vice-président du Comité d’éthique de la recherche du College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta.
Le Dr Samuels était chercheur principal de l’initiative de recherche sur la santé et la performance humaines du Service de police de Calgary, un projet nord-américain collaboratif sur dix ans auquel ont participé l’Université Harvard, l’Université de l’État de New York à Buffalo, l’Université de l’État de Washington et le National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health des États-Unis. Dans le cadre de ce projet, les chercheurs se sont penchés sur l’incidence du travail par quarts sur la santé et la performance des policiers et a mené à la publication de « Sleep Loss in Police and implications for Other First Responders and the Military », un chapitre de Principles and Practice of Sleep Medicine, qu’il a rédigé en collaboration avec le
Dr Bryan Vila.
Dr. Sol Sax Le Dr Sax est médecin du travail depuis plus de 30 ans. Bien qu’il soit foncièrement médecin de famille, il a entamé sa carrière en médecine du travail en 1980 comme médecin membre du personnel à Ontario Hydro (aujourd’hui OPG), et il est devenu médecin-chef en 1986. Il a passé deux ans comme consultant autonome à Boeing Canada et aux journaux Toronto Star comme directeur médical (1989 à 1991). Par la suite il a passé presque vingt ans à la compagnie DuPont, d’abord comme directeur médical du Canada, et ensuite comme directeur médical international. Depuis qu’il a quitté ce poste en 2007, il a travaillé pour différentes organisations, y compris GE, depuis 2013, comme directeur médical du Canada à temps partiel, GSK, Hamilton Hospitals Assessment Center, Tonolli, Kinross Gold et Vale Inco, entre autres. Il a été consultant médical à la CSPAAT et à la CCEA, et il a participé à plusieurs comités internationaux, groupes de travail et comités consultatifs.
Il a été membre du comité consultatif sur la santé du YMCA de Toronto et membre de du conseil exécutif de plusieurs organisations professionnelles, notamment en tant que trésorier de l’Association canadienne de la médecine du travail et de l’environnement (1997 à 2002), président de l’Ontario Society for Occupational and Environmental Medicine et président de l’Alliance of SHE Professionals of Ontario. Il est l’ancien président de la section de l’OMA sur la santé du travail et de l’environnement. Il est chargé de cours à la Faculté de médecine à l’Université de Toronto et à l’École de médecine du Nord de l’Ontario. Il a également agi à titre d’examinateur au Collège royal des médecins et de chirurgiens et à la Commission canadienne de la médecine du travail.
Né en Australie occidentale, le Dr Sol est diplômé de l’Université de Toronto en génie (1973) et en médecine (1978). Il a obtenu son diplôme d’études supérieures en sécurité et santé au travail en 1981 de l’Université McMaster et a reçu son titre d’associé du Collège royal des médecins et de chirurgiens du Canada en 1989. Il est amateur du plein air qui aime jouer au tennis, faire du vélo et s’affairer à son chalet.
Dr. A. Robert Schnatter M. Schnatter est conseiller scientifique supérieur à ExxonMobil Biomedical Sciences Inc., à Clinton, New Jersey aux États-Unis. Il est membre l’American College of Epidemiology et l’unique conseiller industriel du répertoire national des décès des États-Unis. Il est titulaire d’un doctorat en épidémiologie de l’Université Columbia et d’une maîtrise en biostatistique de l’Université de Pittsburg. Ses recherches portent principalement sur les effets de l’exposition au benzène sur la santé, et il a récemment mené à terme deux projets majeurs, soient un examen multidisciplinaire des effets du benzène sur la santé dans diverses industries de la région de Shanghai et une analyse groupée internationale des travailleurs de l’industrie du pétrole exposés au benzène. Il est également l’auteur principal d’une étude canadienne sur travailleurs de la Compagnie Pétrolière Impériale Ltée ayant figuré dans l’analyse groupée internationale, et il a mené des études de cohorte dans lesquelles il a étudié les effets de l’amiante et d’autres expositions chez ces travailleurs. Il est président du conseil technique supérieur de sa société, groupe qui promeut la santé technique dans un large éventail de domaines de recherche et de génie. Il occupe souvent les fonctions de mentor, relecteur arbitre de revues et participant aux comités consultatifs sur l’exposition au benzène et le rôle des données épidémiologiques dans l’évaluation du risque.
Dr. Hakique Virani Le Dr Virani est médecin spécialiste agréé en médecine des dépendances (par l’American Board of Addictions Medicine) et en médecine de la santé publique et préventive (par le Collège royal des médecins et chirurgiens du Canada). Il est professeur clinique agrégé à la Faculté de médecine et de médecine dentaire de l’Université de l’Alberta. Il a assumé divers rôles de direction dans la communauté médicale et ailleurs. Depuis le début de sa carrière, il travaille à la mise en œuvre d’approches en santé publique visant à résoudre des questions critiques telles que l’abus de médicaments sur ordonnance et la pharmacodépendance, l’intervention en cas de pandémie et les disparités en matière de santé de la population qui touchent les Premières nations du Canada.
Le Dr Virani participe au comité consultatif du sur le traitement de maintien de la méthadone du Collège royal des médecins et chirurgiens. Il fait également partie de la coalition provinciale sur l’abus de médicaments d’ordonnance depuis la mise sur pied de celle-ci, le premier effort intersectoriel de son genre au Canada. De plus, il a siégé au comité consultatif national ayant formulé la stratégie nationale du Canada de lutte contre l’abus de médicaments d’ordonnance : S’abstenir de faire du mal. Le Dr Virani enseigne la version albertaine du cours d’introduction sur le traitement de la dépendance aux opiacés au Centre de toxicomanie et de santé mentale.
En reconnaissance de ses contributions dans le domaine des soins de santé et dans la collectivité, le Dr Virani a été nommé l’un des 40 Canadiens performants de moins de 40 ans à Edmonton par le magazine Avenue.
Dr. JianLi Wang M. Wang est professeur agrégé aux Départements de Psychiatrie et des sciences de la santé communautaire de la Faculté de médecine à l’Université de Calgary, où il a obtenu son doctorat en épidémiologie. À titre de chercheur, il s’intéresse à l’épidémiologie psychiatrique, se concentrant sur l’élaboration d’outils de prévision visant la détection précoce de troubles mentaux, ainsi qu’à la santé mentale au travail. Le Dr Wang dirige des projets de recherche financés par les Instituts de recherche en santé du Canada portant sur les facteurs propres aux milieux de travail qui déclenchent les troubles dépressifs et anxieux, l’incidence de ces facteurs et des troubles mentaux sur la productivité (présentéisme et absentéisme), l’intention de démissionner et les aménagements en matière de santé mentale dans le milieu de travail pour les employés souffrant d’un trouble mental.
